Is It Time to Rethink Our Educational System
Maybe like our out of control government, maybe we should rethink this whole educational system. After all statistics show we’re not turning out that many Einsteins these days. The US ranks eighteen in education in the industrialized world. No kid left behind was great on paper, the only problem we have now is that teachers cheat as much as the kids. Remember, teachers pay and revenue to the schools is based on performance. I’m not dissing teachers, I know some good ones. The ratio has to be 80/20 though.
The kids brought home their reports cards this week. Not bad, but not real great. We also got the CSAP (Colorado Student Assessment Program) scores for Mikalya. Slightly above average in her reading. Why did we spend $12,000 in two years to send her and Duncan to a private christian school that specializes in reading and literacy? I’m glad their back in the public school system… just wish I had my $12k back.
The big complaint this year in the public school system is that teachers don’t have enough money in their budget to use the copier. Rationing copies… what has this world come to? This comes on the heels of going to a four day school week. On the bright side they got a 20% turnout on last week’s parent/teacher conference.
This 12 minute video given by Sir Ken Robinson a world-renowned education and creativity expert is worth watching. Especially the bit about the date of manufacture and a one size fits all mentality.
The artists at Cognitive Media do an excellent job of scribing the talk. They have some real talent over there.
